Boehringer Ingelheim | 3D Interactive Canine Anatomy App as a Clinical Tool

Interactive visualization to improve understanding and prescription

In veterinary consultations, one of the biggest challenges is helping dog owners understand what is causing their pet’s pain, why it is happening, and how it can be treated. Clearly and convincingly explaining the origin of osteoarticular pain and how anti-inflammatory treatments work can be tricky.

To assist professionals in this task, we developed an interactive desktop app for Sanofi, focused on 3D visualization of canine anatomy, specifically targeting the most commonly affected areas (osteoarthritis, hip dysplasia, degenerative spondylosis, cruciate ligament rupture). The tool allows professionals to show the dog’s joint anatomy in 3D, identify areas affected by osteoarthritis, and explain visually and directly why Previcox, an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) used to treat pain and inflammation in dogs, is prescribed.

Interactive applications in veterinary consultations

1. Visual explanation of joint pain

With the app, professionals can rotate and zoom in on the dog’s anatomical model, clearly pointing out where the pain is located: hip, elbow, knee, or spine. It highlights inflamed areas, reduced mobility, or degenerative processes typical of osteoarthritis.

“Since I’ve started using the app, I’ve noticed that owners understand much better what’s happening to their dog and why it needs medication. They see the pain, I don’t have to convince them.”

2.Clinical justification of Previcox prescription

The tool allows professionals to explain how Previcox works locally, reducing inflammation and alleviating pain without affecting the overall well-being of the animal. It provides medical context in a visual language that is accessible even to those without veterinary training.

3. Support in decision-making

In many cases, the owner’s question is not whether to treat, but whether the treatment is necessary immediately, or if there are other options. This app helps clarify the clinical picture in seconds, showing why it’s crucial to act before the dog’s mobility becomes further compromised.

This tool is not designed for training, but to assist the professional in communication.
A picture is worth a thousand words, and a 3D joint that displays symptoms of pain, stiffness and inflammation is worth more than any technical explanation.

With this app, the consultation becomes a clearer, more empathetic and more effective experience.
