What Is a Medical Serious Game? (And When You Need It)

A video game with an educational or training purpose rather than an entertainment one. In healthcare it is used when the audience has to do something rather than watch something: handle a product, follow a protocol, take a decision and see the consequence.

It turns a message into an action

A visitor who plays remembers what they did. A visitor who watches remembers that there was a screen.

It earns time at a stand

At a congress the scarce resource is not attention, it is minutes. A game buys them, and the conversation starts from what the person just did.

It can be measured

Turns played, time per turn, decisions taken. A film gives you views; an experience gives you behaviour.

Congresses and trade shows

Short turns, clear rules, no instructions needed. The stand stops being a corridor and becomes a queue.

Patient education and adherence

The same science, pitched to someone who has to live with the therapy rather than prescribe it.

BENEFITS OF GAMIFICATION IN HEALTHCARE

4

A person who plays remembers what they did

Watching a video and taking part in a decision are not the same kind of memory. The visitor who played can tell you afterwards what the product does, because they did it.

5

It buys time at a congress

At a stand the scarce resource is not attention, it is minutes. A short, repeatable turn earns them, and the conversation starts from what the person just did.

4

It produces data, not just views

Turns played, time per turn and the decisions taken inside the game are all recordable. That is more than a film can tell you about the same audience.

5

It trains by doing

Protocols and decision trees are learned faster when the trainee performs them and sees the consequence, and the same build serves a classroom and a congress.

5

It travels beyond the event

The stand version, the training version and the web or tablet version share most of the assets if the output list is agreed before production.

WORK PROCESS

1

Brief & kickoff

We start from your data, goals, audience, and deadline. You bring the science and the message; we tell you what’s possible and how to make it land.

2

Script & storyboard

We turn the science into a clear narrative and a visual plan you approve before any animation begins, so everyone’s aligned while changes are still cheap.

3

Style frames & 3D modeling

We lock the visual style and build accurate models of your molecule, device, or anatomy.

4

Animation & production

We animate, light, and render in structured review rounds, so your medical, legal, and marketing stakeholders can all sign off in step.

5

Delivery in every format

You get the master plus every version you need — congress, web, social, sales, subtitled, or interactive.

Timelines & What to Expect

You will always know what stage you’re in, what you’re approving, and what comes next. Most projects run 4–10 weeks from brief to delivery, depending on length and complexity. Working against a congress or launch date? Tell us the deadline up front. We plan the entire production backward from it and after 25 years of trade shows and launches, we’ve hit a lot of them.

Factors That Determine the Price of a Serious Game

A serious game is priced by what has to be built and where it has to run, so the same idea can cost very differently. These are the factors that move the figure.

Platform and hardware

A standalone virtual reality headset, a touchscreen, a tablet or the web are four different builds, not four finishes.

How long a turn lasts

At a stand the limit is the queue. A short, repeatable turn costs less to build and works better than a long one.

How much 3D has to be built

Existing product models and assets shorten production. Building the product, the environment and the characters from zero does not.

Scientific and regulatory review

The claims inside a game are claims. Review is part of the schedule, as it is in any pharmaceutical piece.

Languages, markets and on-site support

Text, voice-over and local claim sets are decided before production rather than after it. Setting up headsets at a congress, training the stand team and being reachable during the event is part of the project.

What this Investment Buys You:

Scientifically Accurate

Science that’s accurate and review-ready, not just pretty.

Full Ownership

Full ownership of your animation and every deliverable.

Every Format, From One Partner

Every format your team needs, from one partner.

On-Deadline Delivery

A studio that hits the deadline your project is built around.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT MEDICAL SERIOUS GAMES

What is a serious game in healthcare?

A video game with an educational or training purpose rather than an entertainment one. In healthcare it is used when the audience has to do something — handle a product, follow a protocol, take a decision — instead of watching an explanation.

When is a serious game better than an animation?

When the setting allows physical participation and the message is not only what the product is but what it does. At a congress stand or in a training session a game earns time and attention. For a website, an email or an unattended screen, a linear animation is better and cheaper.

What hardware do we need?

It depends on the brief. Standalone virtual reality headsets need no computer or external sensors, which is what makes them practical at a congress. A touchscreen or a tablet lowers the barrier for visitors who will not put on a headset. The choice determines how much graphical detail the experience can carry and how many people can play at once.

How long should each turn last?

Short. At a stand the limiting factor is the queue, not the content: a turn that a visitor can finish, understand and talk about is worth more than a longer one that half of them abandon.

Can it be measured?

Yes, and that is one of the reasons to build one. Turns played, time per turn and the decisions taken inside the game are all recordable, which is more than a video can tell you.

Does it go through medical and regulatory review?

Yes. Everything the game states about a product or a therapy is a claim and goes through the same review as any other pharmaceutical material. We build the content modular so that a change in one claim does not mean rebuilding the game.

Can the same experience be reused after the congress?

Usually, and it should be planned from the start. A stand version, a training version and a web or tablet version share most of the assets if the output list is agreed before production.

Do you also do the 3D characters and environments?

Yes. We build characters from photorealistic to illustrative style, and the environments they move in, which is the same work behind our interactive and animation projects.

How long does it take?

It depends on platform, length of a turn and how much has to be modelled from zero. We give a schedule with the quotation, and the part that moves it most is review, not production.

What do you need from us to start?

What you want the player to understand or be able to do afterwards, who is going to play, where it will be used, the claims you can make, and any 3D or brand material you already have.

The team that worked on my project took it to the next level. I came in with an idea, and they helped turn it into something far more powerful—with a real WOW effect for our clients. They delivered ahead of schedule and were completely professional throughout. What really surprised me was that we didn’t need to make a single change between the draft and the final version. For me, they’ll be a key strategic partner going forward.
