DIGITAL HUMANS & MEDICAL AVATARS
Digital Humans & Medical Avatars
for Health Communication
Real-time 3D people that explain, guide and answer —
accurate enough for medical review, human enough to hold attention.
For 25+ years, Pixel Medical Animation has built interactive 3D for pharma, biotech and medical device companies.
Avatars and digital humans for serious games, congress stands, virtual spaces and patient-facing pieces, developed in-house. Based in Europe, working with teams across the US every day.

Faces that carry a story without exposing a real patient. For Evidenze and BioCryst we generated patient imagery for the travelling exhibition on hereditary angioedema. See the angioedema exhibitionAvatars in VR and AR
The same digital human delivered in a VR headset, on a phone through augmented reality, or on AR glasses at a stand. For Fresenius Kabi we built two animated medical characters that appear on the user’s own desk from a QR code in a newsletter and introduce a launch in a short dialogue. A presenter or guide inside the presentation itself, so a stand keeps explaining when nobody from your team is free to speak. See 3D presentationsDigital Humans for Pharma, Medtech, Hospitals & Congresses
Pharma & biotech
Avatars that explain a mechanism, a therapy or a trial to physicians and patients, and that keep saying it the same way at every stand and in every market. See MOA animation.
Medical device companies
A digital human that shows the device being handled correctly, so reps and clinical staff can train without a specialist in the room. See device animation.
Hospitals and patient education
A familiar face that prepares a patient for what is coming, in a tone a waiting room can take. See patient education.
Congresses, events and training

What Is a Digital Human? (And When an Avatar Is the Right Answer)
A digital human is a 3D person rendered in real time: modelled, rigged and animated so it can speak, react and be looked at closely. A medical avatar is that same figure put to work in a health context — explaining, training, guiding or representing a patient. Six situations where it earns its place.
Answer the same questions, over and over
At a stand, on a landing page or inside a virtual event, a conversational avatar answers in real time, collects the data from each interaction and never gets tired of the first question of the day.
Put a face to a condition without exposing a patient
When the story is personal but the person cannot be shown, a generated face carries the testimony. That is what we did with Evidenze and BioCryst for hereditary angioedema.
Teach a procedure by doing it
Inside a serious game or a simulation, the avatar is who the learner is — or the virtual patient they treat. Performing the steps is what makes the training stick. See how we build serious games.
Host a virtual event or a metaverse space
Attendees move and talk as avatars, and a guide avatar walks them through the content instead of leaving them alone in an empty 3D room.
Train reps and clinical staff consistently
One avatar explains the mechanism and the handling the same way in every country, every time, with no specialist required in the room.
Reach the user where they already are
The same digital human can be delivered on the web, in a VR headset, through augmented reality on a phone, or on AR glasses at a congress stand.
BENEFITS OF MEDICAL AVATARS AND DIGITAL HUMANS
Attention that does not drift
A face looking back at the viewer holds a congress visitor or a patient far longer than a slide does, and it keeps working when nobody from your team is free to talk.
The same message, every time
An avatar explains the mechanism, the therapy or the device handling identically in every country and at every event. No specialist in the room, no version drift.
A story without exposing a patient
Generated faces let you tell a personal story while the real person stays private, which is why they work in disease-awareness campaigns.
Interaction you can measure
A conversational avatar records what people actually ask, so the questions come back to you as data instead of as a hunch.
One build, many channels
Web, VR headset, augmented reality on a phone, AR glasses or a large screen at a stand: the same digital human, re-used instead of re-made.

WORK PROCESS
1
Brief & kickoff
We start from your data, goals, audience, and deadline. You bring the science and the message; we tell you what’s possible and how to make it land.
2
Script & storyboard
We turn the science into a clear narrative and a visual plan you approve before any animation begins, so everyone’s aligned while changes are still cheap.
3
Style frames & 3D modeling
We lock the visual style and build accurate models of your molecule, device, or anatomy.
4
Animation & production
We animate, light, and render in structured review rounds, so your medical, legal, and marketing stakeholders can all sign off in step.
5
Delivery in every format
You get the master plus every version you need — congress, web, social, sales, subtitled, or interactive.
Timelines & What to Expect
You will always know what stage you’re in, what you’re approving, and what comes next. Most projects run 4–10 weeks from brief to delivery, depending on length and complexity. Working against a congress or launch date? Tell us the deadline up front. We plan the entire production backward from it and after 25 years of trade shows and launches, we’ve hit a lot of them.
What Determines the Price of a Digital Human
There is no single figure, because an avatar that reads a script and an avatar that answers questions are two different builds. These are the five things that move the budget.
How close the camera gets
A figure seen at full height in a virtual room and a face filling a screen at a stand need very different levels of skin, eyes and hair.
Whether it only speaks or also answers
A pre-recorded avatar is a 3D production. A conversational one adds response logic, conversation flows and the plumbing to collect what people ask — the chain is set out in how a digital human is built.
Where it has to run
Web, VR headset, augmented reality on a phone, AR glasses or a large screen at a congress — each delivery has its own optimisation work.
How much of it is custom
Reusing a body and a face we already have is not the same as modelling a character from scratch, or building it from a 3D body and face scan.
Languages, versions and review
Every market, every voice and every round of medical or legal review adds production, not just translation.

What is a digital human?
A 3D person rendered in real time — modelled, rigged and animated so it can speak, react and be looked at closely. In health communication it is used as a presenter, a guide, an assistant or a patient.
What is the difference between a medical avatar and a digital human?
In practice they overlap. “Digital human” usually points at realism — a figure meant to pass as a person on screen. “Avatar” points at function — a figure that represents someone, whether photoreal, stylised or abstract. A single project often needs both.
Can the avatar answer questions in real time?
Yes. We design conversational assistants that answer in real time, collect the data from each interaction and guide the user through scientific or commercial information. The avatar can also be pre-recorded if the content is fixed and the budget is tighter.
Where can we use it — web, VR, AR, a congress stand?
All of them. The same digital human can run on a web page, inside a VR headset, through augmented reality on a smartphone or AR glasses, in a virtual event space, or on a large screen at a stand. The build is optimised per channel.
Can you use a real person’s face or voice?
Only with that person’s written consent and with source material you own — a 3D body and face scan, footage or recordings. When consent is not available, or the point is precisely to protect someone’s privacy, we build a generated face instead, which is what we did for the hereditary angioedema exhibition with Evidenze and BioCryst.
How long does a medical avatar take?
It depends on realism, on whether it only speaks or also answers, and on how many channels it has to run in. We give you a timeline with the quote, after agreeing the level of detail with your team.
Who reviews the medical content?
Your specialists. We agree the script and the level of detail with your medical or scientific team first, and they review at script and at first render — not at the end, when changes are expensive.
