What Is Scientific Illustration? (And When You Need It)
A still image built from the same 3D work as an animation: anatomy, molecules, devices or processes modelled and lit so that a single frame explains what a paragraph cannot. It is what goes on a poster, in a slide, in a paper or on a packaging insert.
Accuracy before style.
An illustration that looks good and is wrong is worse than no illustration. Proportions, scale and the relationship between structures come first; the rendering comes after. That is the part a scientific reviewer looks at.
One idea per image.
A still frame can only carry one message. A mechanism, a step, a comparison. When an image tries to explain three things at once the reader keeps none of them.
Built to be reused.
The same 3D scene gives a poster at print resolution, a slide, a web image and, if it is needed later, an animation. Deciding the formats before production is what makes that possible.
Congresses, posters and talks.
A poster is read standing up, in a corridor, in a few seconds. An illustration that works there is one that can be understood without the caption, as in the material prepared for Dr. Danila’s TED talk.
Publications and teaching material.
Papers, books and course material need figures that are consistent with each other: the same colour code, the same level of abstraction and the same anatomy across the whole set.
Product and ingredient communication.
Showing what an active ingredient or a component does, at a scale no camera reaches. The exosome visualizations for Germaine de Capuccini and the botanical work on tulsi were made for exactly that.
BENEFITS OF SCIENTIFIC ILLUSTRATION AND INFOGRAPHICS
One image that carries the whole idea
A reader who will not watch a two-minute video will look at one picture. When the picture is right, that is the whole explanation.
It survives a specialist reading it
Proportions, scale and the relationship between structures come first, so the figure holds up in a paper, a poster or a regulatory file.
It works where video cannot go
A printed poster, a journal page, a packaging insert, a slide in a room with no sound: places a film never reaches.
The same scene gives every format
Print resolution, slide, web image and, later, an animation, all from one 3D build.
It makes your science shareable
A clear figure gets reused by your own teams, by the press and by the people you are trying to convince.

WORK PROCESS
1
Brief & kickoff
We start from your data, goals, audience, and deadline. You bring the science and the message; we tell you what’s possible and how to make it land.
2
Script & storyboard
We turn the science into a clear narrative and a visual plan you approve before any animation begins, so everyone’s aligned while changes are still cheap.
3
Style frames & 3D modeling
We lock the visual style and build accurate models of your molecule, device, or anatomy.
4
Animation & production
We animate, light, and render in structured review rounds, so your medical, legal, and marketing stakeholders can all sign off in step.
5
Delivery in every format
You get the master plus every version you need — congress, web, social, sales, subtitled, or interactive.
Timelines & What to Expect
You will always know what stage you’re in, what you’re approving, and what comes next. Most projects run 4–10 weeks from brief to delivery, depending on length and complexity. Working against a congress or launch date? Tell us the deadline up front. We plan the entire production backward from it and after 25 years of trade shows and launches, we’ve hit a lot of them.
Factors That Determine the Price of a Scientific Illustration
An illustration that reuses an existing model is not the same job as one that starts from a structure nobody has built yet. These are the factors that move the figure.
How much has to be modelled from scratch.
An illustration that reuses an existing model is not the same job as one that starts from a structure nobody has built yet. The modelling is usually the longest part.
The level of scientific detail.
A schematic diagram and a hyperrealistic visualization answer different briefs. The second takes longer in materials, lighting and the detail that stands up to being printed large.
The material you give us.
Imaging, CAD files, papers, previous figures. The more of the science that arrives already settled, the less of the schedule goes into deciding what the image has to show.
Number of images and variants.
A set of figures for a publication, a poster and a slide deck share most of the work if the list is agreed before production rather than after it.
Scientific review, formats and print resolution
Someone qualified has to confirm that what the image shows is what happens, and a web image and a two-metre poster are not rendered the same way. Both are decided at the start.

What counts as scientific illustration?
Any still image built to explain science accurately: anatomy, a molecule, a device, a process or an ingredient. It can be a schematic diagram or a hyperrealistic render, depending on who has to read it.
Is it the same work as a medical animation?
It uses the same 3D work, but it ends in a frame instead of a sequence. Many of our illustrations come from scenes that were built for an animation, and many animations start from an illustration that was approved first.
Who confirms that the image is scientifically accurate?
Someone qualified on your side, as with any of our projects. We build what the science says and your reviewer confirms it before the image is finished.
Can it be printed at poster size?
Yes, as long as we know before rendering. A poster, a roll-up and a web image are rendered at different resolutions from the same scene.
Can you work from our existing figures?
Yes. Previous figures, imaging, CAD files and papers all shorten the part of the job that decides what the image has to show.
Do you also do infographics with text and data?
Yes. The illustration is the centre of the piece and the layout, labels and sequence are built around it so that it reads on its own.
How long does it take?
It depends on how much has to be modelled from scratch and how many review rounds the science needs. We give a schedule with the quotation.
Can the same image be reused later?
Yes. The 3D scene stays, so a new angle, a new language version or an animated version of the same image does not start from zero.
