HEREDITARY ANGIOEDEMA | EVIDENZE
HEREDITARY ANGIOEDEMA EVIDENZE
About the Project
About the Project
The disease is hereditary. Symptoms include swelling in limbs, face, and internal organs, causing intense abdominal pain, vomiting, and, in severe cases, difficulty breathing (potentially fatal). It does not respond to anti-histamines or corticosteroids.
Interactive and Immersive Experience
Evidenze Agency and BioCryst Pharmaceuticals commissioned Pixel Medical Animation to create 3D graphics to illustrate this disease. This commission came through an agency: here is how we work with communication agencies.
This is part of an itinerant exhibition “Putting a Face to Hereditary Angioedema”, an initiative aimed at raising awareness about this rare genetic disease, it coincided with the World Rare Diseases Day on February 28.
The exhibition, which was at the Vall d’Hebron Hospital’s Women and Children Ward until 7th March, offers an interactive and immersive experience to help people understand the challenges faced by those with HAE. Through various elements, the display provided more insight into the disease and its impact on the daily lives of those affected.
A hexagon fitted with giant screens showed AI-generated images of patients while their first-person testimonies played, describing how the condition affects their daily lives. Visitors could also step in front of an interactive mirror that recreated, in real time, how the face changes during an angioedema episode, giving a sensory and emotional understanding of the disease.
The exhibition is part of a national tour that has already visited spaces like La Paz Hospital in Madrid, Virgen del Rocío Hospital in Seville, the Congress of the Spanish Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (SEAIC) in Bilbao and the University Hospital Complex of Vigo. (Its next stop will be at the University Hospital Complex of Vigo, starting May 16.)

WHAT 3D BRINGS TO AN EXHIBITION
WHAT 3D BRINGS TO AN EXHIBITION
- A disease you cannot see from the outside: hereditary angioedema causes episodes of swelling in the skin, the gastrointestinal tract and the airways, caused by a deficiency or malfunction of the C1 esterase inhibitor. It is an internal process that no photograph can show, and a visitor to an exhibition has no reason to have clinical training: 3D graphics make it possible to represent that mechanism in a way that can be understood without any prior knowledge.
- A commission that came through an agency: the campaign, the client relationship and the strategy belonged to Evidenze; we handled the 3D production side. It is the model we work with for communication, advertising and event agencies: we do not take on strategy or media planning.
Who commissioned the project and which part did Pixel Medical Animation develop?
The agency Evidenze and BioCryst Pharmaceuticals commissioned the 3D graphics to illustrate the disease. The campaign, the strategy and the relationship with the client belonged to the agency; we came in as the 3D production team.
Where has the exhibition been shown?
The exhibition «Poniendo cara al angioedema hereditario» (Putting a face to hereditary angioedema) could be visited in the lobby of the Hospital Infantil i de la Dona at Vall d’Hebron, in Barcelona, and is part of a national tour that has also passed through Hospital La Paz in Madrid, Hospital Virgen del Rocío in Seville, the congress of the Spanish Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (SEAIC) in Bilbao and the Complexo Hospitalario Universitario de Vigo.
What does the experience consist of?
A hexagon with giant screens shows AI-generated images of patients while their first-person testimonies are heard, and an interactive mirror recreates in real time how a face changes during an angioedema episode, so that the disease can be understood from a sensory and emotional perspective.
Why a travelling exhibition and not a leaflet?
The initiative sets out to raise awareness of a rare genetic disease, timed to coincide with World Rare Disease Day. An interactive, immersive format lets visitors understand the challenges people with hereditary angioedema face and the impact it has on their daily lives, something printed material cannot convey.
How do you work when the commission comes through an agency?
With the same five phases as in any other project: script and indicative budget, storyboard, development with preview images for validation, rendering and sound, and delivery. The difference is that the relationship with the end client, the strategy and the campaign creative belong to the agency. You can see it in more detail on the 3D production for agencies page.
What usage rights does the client get?
The client obtains full usage rights over the content developed and the applications created.
