Hereditary Angioedema (HAE) is a rare genetic disorder that causes recurrent episodes of swelling in the skin, gastrointestinal tract, and respiratory pathways. It is due to a deficiency or dysfunction of the C1 esterase inhibitor (C1-INH), a protein that regulates the immune system and inflammation.

The disease is hereditary. Symptoms include swelling in limbs, face, and internal organs, causing intense abdominal pain, vomiting, and, in severe cases, difficulty breathing (potentially fatal). It does not respond to anti-histamines or corticosteroids.

Interactive and Immersive Experience

Evidenze Agency and BioCryst Pharmaceuticals commissioned Pixel Medical Animation to create 3D graphics to illustrate this disease.

This is part of an itinerant exhibition “Putting a Face to Hereditary Angioedema”, an initiative aimed at raising awareness about this rare genetic disease, it coincided with the World Rare Diseases Day on February 28.

The exhibition, which was at the Vall d’Hebron Hospital’s Women and Children Ward until 7th March, offers an interactive and immersive experience to help people understand the challenges faced by those with HAE. Through various elements, the display provided more insight into the disease and its impact on the daily lives of those affected.

The exhibition is part of a national tour that has already visited spaces like La Paz Hospital in Madrid, Virgen del Rocío Hospital in Seville, the Congress of the Spanish Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (SEAIC) in Bilbao and the University Hospital Complex of Vigo. (Its next stop will be at the University Hospital Complex of Vigo, starting May 16.)
