Why a medical device is easier to explain with 3D animation than with photography
A product photograph shows the finished device, but not what happens inside it or how it is used. With a system such as MYTHRA, whose value lies in how the energy is delivered and controlled, medical device animation can rotate the product, isolate a component, slow a sequence down or show the same movement twice from two different angles. Photography depends on a physical unit existing and on studio conditions; 3D animation starts from the device model, so the piece can be produced while the product is still in pre-launch and adjusted later if the design changes.
The interface is the clearest example. Filming a screen legibly, at the right moment and at the right angle, is difficult and often has to be repeated whenever the software is updated. Integrating the interface into the device screen in 3D, as we did for MYTHRA, keeps it readable from any camera position and lets it be replaced on its own if the software evolves, without rebuilding the rest of the animation.

What do you need from us to start a medical device animation?
The ideal starting point is the 3D or CAD model of the device, which is how the MYTHRA project began: we worked from the model supplied by Novasonix and from real product references to reproduce materials, finishes and proportions. When there is no usable 3D model, it can be built from technical drawings, dimensions and photographs, although that adds modelling time to the project.
Can the animation be produced before the device is launched?
Yes. Because the animation is generated from the model and not from a physical unit, the piece can exist before the first production units do. That is one of the most common reasons medtech companies ask for it: distributor and sales-team training, investor meetings or a congress that falls before the commercial launch.
How long should a medical device animation be?
It depends on where it will be shown. MYTHRA was designed as a one-minute video, enough for a conceptual introduction, the reveal of the brand and the device, a full rotation and the key differentiators. A loop for a trade-show screen is usually shorter and works without narration; a technical or training piece can be longer and go into the operating sequence in more depth.
Can the same animation be used at trade shows, in sales meetings and on social media?
That is exactly how the MYTHRA piece was conceived. From a single production, different versions can be derived: shorter cuts, vertical or square formats for social media, versions with and without on-screen text, or the same render with text in another language, without going back to the modelling stage.
Does the animation have to be photorealistic?
Not always. Photorealistic rendering is the right choice when the message is design, materials and finishes, as with MYTHRA. When the message is a mechanism, an internal component or a clinical procedure, a more schematic or sectioned treatment often communicates better, and both approaches can coexist in the same piece.
How do you decide what to highlight and what to leave out?
By starting from the commercial message rather than from the product sheet. In the MYTHRA animation the technological differentiators were highlighted with graphical bullet points and on-screen text, which forces a decision about what really has to be understood in one minute. Everything that does not serve that message tends to weaken it, however interesting it may be technically.
Is a device animation the same as a mechanism of action animation?
No. A device animation focuses on the product: design, interface, components and how it is used. A mechanism of action animation focuses on the biological process that a drug or a treatment triggers inside the body. Companies that sell both a device and a therapy often need one of each, because the audience and the question being answered are different.
What happens if the device changes after the animation is finished?
If the base model and the narrative structure remain valid, the affected part can be adjusted and re-rendered without rebuilding the project from scratch. A change of colour, a new interface or a modified detail of the housing is normally a partial update; a redesign of the whole product is a new piece.
Can the animation be reused for training rather than sales?
Yes, and it is a frequent second life for these projects. The same model and the same camera work can be re-edited into a slower, more explanatory sequence for internal training or for teaching a practitioner how the system is set up and operated, changing the pace and the text instead of the 3D work.
