Augmented Reality: Digital Precision and Advanced Simulation for Medical Training
Werfen, a leader in medical technology, identified the need to transform its traditional training processes into an immersive and collaborative experience.
The company required a solution that would allow training professionals on the use of medical equipment—Quantalyzer, Bioflash, and Aptiva—through interactive simulations in a virtual environment using tablets (iPads) and scanning markers to access clinical cases with predefined results and audiovisual resources.
Development of Digital Twin AR for Werfen
Augmented Reality (AR) projects interactive 3D models of equipment onto the user’s real environment, making them appear as if they were physically present. This solution offers clear technical and commercial benefits:
- True to size and reality: Devices are presented at full size, with all modules and accessories visible.
- Interactive explanation:Users can virtually touch each part of the equipment and discover its functions.
- No logistics and no limits: The entire range of products can be displayed without needing to move the real equipment.
- Precise space planning: Ideal for labs that need to know if the equipment will fit in the actual space before acquiring it.
Practical Applications of AR in the Werfen Environment
Pixel Medical Animation implemented a comprehensive solution based on advanced AR techniques, developed in four phases. First, a virtual 3D lab was created simulating a medical office, providing an interface to access three clinical cases. This phase involved detailed modeling of the medical equipment, ensuring an accurate and realistic user interactive experience.
1. Creation of the Virtual Lab and Equipment Modeling
A 3D virtual lab was designed and modeled, set up as a medical office/lab that serves as a portal to access the three clinical cases. At the same time, realistic digital representations of the Quantalyzer, Bioflash, and Aptiva devices were developed, ensuring precise visualization and user interaction.
2. Presentation of Quanta-Lyser Clinical Cases
An interactive interface was implemented that displays five elements in the virtual environment. By selecting any of these elements, the system shows a screen with predefined results, established according to the training script. Additionally, a video clip provided by Werfen was integrated, which plays before loading the high-resolution panels, enriching the interactive experience.
The automated ELISA testing system can be projected to real scale, showing:
- The full loading, pipetting and reading sequence
- The different functional modules
- Animations of the step-by-step workflow
3. Visualization of Bio-Flash Clinical Case
For the Bioflash device, nine interactive panels were designed. Each panel, when activated, presents a predefined response through a Qlink-style screen, ensuring consistency with the expected training outcomes. The corresponding audiovisual material was also included, following the integration guidelines set in the previous phase.
For the luminescence immunoanalysis systems, AR helps:
- Provide clear explanations of the closed reagent system
- Simulate the full cycle from sample to result
- Quickly identify competitive advantages
4. Exploration of Aptiva Clinical Case
For Aptiva, 10 interactive panels were developed to show predefined clinical results. As in the previous phases, the video clip provided by Werfen was included, enabling a smooth and coherent transition to the high-resolution panel visualization.
Werfen’s advanced platform, Aptiva, can be explored in detail:
- Visualization of its multi-analysis system
- Demonstration of parallel test flows
- Real-time adaptation to different client spaces
Benefits of Augmented Reality in the Healthcare Sector
AR in healthcare enables the simulation of real clinical environments with precision, integrating 3D models and interactive data that enhance the understanding and retention of complex concepts.
This technology improves training by offering accurate content updates, reducing errors and optimizing resources, leading to safer and more efficient learning.
With this application, Werfen has transformed the way it presents its equipment, combining science and technology into a visual, intuitive and precise experience for its internal training.
The result: More impact, better technical understanding and increased commercial agility.
